Description

The School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time open-rank, tenured or tenure-track faculty member to begin in Fall 2024. The School is part of the top-ranked Moody College of Communication, which includes programs in Advertising and Public Relations, Communication Studies, Radio-Television-Film, and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. The School, which offers B.J., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, is housed in the G.B. Dealey Center for New Media.

This faculty position will focus on emerging media and Internet technologies, including their operations, impact and regulation. A global perspective is expected, especially expertise with Latin American media systems, audiences and policies. Emerging media include but are not limited to social media, AI, augmented and virtual reality, streaming media forms and encrypted systems. Candidates would also have the opportunity to join the vibrant research center and institute culture in Moody College.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. at the time of the appointment. Applicants should have a promising or established program of research and publication, a commitment to teaching excellence, and interest in mentoring graduate students and undertaking collaborative research. We will consider a range of disciplinary, theoretical and methodological expertise.

Preferred applicants will have research and teaching interests in global regulation around emerging media technologies, and implications for privacy, free speech, copyright, and other social, regulatory, and ethical issues. Expertise in research topics such Internet regulation, data and data rights, algorithmic regulation, open data, security implications, and how new media intersect political systems would be welcome. Some methodological pluralism is expected, and applicants with qualitative, quantitative and computational expertise are encouraged to apply.
