Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Academic Engagement, the Student Engagement Coordinator oversees all extra-curricular programming for and by Penn students at the Penn Museum, and is responsible for creating, marketing, and executing the department's primary events. This position serves as staff liaison to the Penn Museum's undergraduate interest groups, devising behind-the-scenes opportunities for members and supporting group-hosted events that draw new students into the Museum. During the summer, the Student Engagement Coordinator oversees the Museum's Summer Internship Program, and coordinates marketing, applications, and logistical planning for the internship program during the preceding academic year.

Along with other Academic Engagement staff, this position will conceive, plan, and execute our flagship Making Workshop series, which allow students to create and experience objects from the collections. This position also supports the department during co-curricular events that target prospective and incoming students, such as Quaker Days in the spring and New Student Orientation in late August. Finally, this position is responsible for all student-focused marketing, including the Penn Museum- Penn Students Facebook page, the Penn Museum student Canvas site, and monthly MailChimp e-newsletters.

Compensation: $23.00 p/hour

Non-Exempt, Full-time (35 hours), In Person

Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all extra-curricular programming for and by Penn students including administrative operations, developing, marketing, and executing events and initiatives.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Penn Museum's undergraduate interest groups; administrative duties related to correspondence, timelines, outreach, event planning; assist in increasing exposure of students to the museum through marketing and communications to students.
  • Oversee the Summer Internship program, including marketing, communications and management of applications and logistical planning preceding the academic year.
  • Assist in the development, planning and completion of 3 - 4 Making Workshops per year.
  • Administrative and event support for the department's activities including printing and advertising needs and other academic events.
  • Responsible for all student-focused communications and marketing platforms, including Facebook, Canvas, and the monthly e-newsletter, working with campus partners.


Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED and 3 to 5 years' experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Attention to detail and the ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously are required. Strong computer skills with knowledge of digital communication platforms are necessary. Must be a team player and comfortable working with groups; must have the ability to make decisions within the scope of responsibility, be highly reliable and dependable. The ability to occasionally work during evenings or weekends is required, and experience working with students is preferred. The work environment typically includes sitting at a desk, computer room or library, with some standing and walking. Occasional lifting of less than 25 lbs. No supervisory responsibilities.

Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years' experience with museum collections work or object-based learning preferred
  • 3 years' experience working in museums, or with archaeological and anthropological collections and an understanding of object-based learning
  • An understanding of historic and contemporary issues in anthropology, archaeology, and museum studies
  • Ability to engage in and lead students in dialogue around current issues in museum practice
  • At least 1 year mentorship experience as a teacher, undergraduate advisor, peer advisor, or counselor
  • 3 years experience working with a wide variety of diverse students, colleagues, and stakeholders
  • Project management experience, ideally in student programs or events, and including budget creation and management
  • Experience coordinating events from conception to post program evaluation
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible museum field
  • Familiarity with scheduling software (Blackbaud/Altru), Outlook, and Basecamp or similar
  • Ability to work in collaboration with a wide range of audiences
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Highly organized and detail oriented


**Please note that this position is a bargaining unit position represented by a labor union. Compensation associated with this position are determined by a collective bargaining agreement.
