Assistant Professor in the Institute for Biomedical Informatics

Location: Philadelphia
Open Date: Mar 12, 2024
Deadline: Mar 12, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Institute for Biomedical Informatics at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, translational bioinformatics, and/or biomedical informatics as applied to human genetics and genomics. As Penn Medicine has invested substantially in developing a diverse medical biobank of over 275,000 Penn Medicine patients, candidates with expertise in leveraging biobanks as part of their research program are of high priority. We are very interested in the development of novel analytical methods to link electronic health records (EHR) data with genetic/genomic data to improve our understanding of the genetic architecture of complex disease. The objective is to enhance our understanding of the underlying causes of complex diseases and to catalyze progress in the way we diagnose, predict, and treat these diseases. We welcome candidates from all areas of computational genomics employing a spectrum of methodologies, spanning from computational biology to statistical genetics to machine learning and artificial intelligence. Applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree.

The Institute for Biomedical Informatics facilitates transdisciplinary collaborations among faculty, staff, and students with expertise in biology, medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, computer and information science, and the management and social sciences. Faculty in the IBI are members of several departments at PSOM and are engaged in a wide range of original research including computational genomics, artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning, big data integration, and investigation into the pathogenesis of human complex disease. Our dynamic research environment is designed to encourage vibrant interaction and collaboration, facilitating the exchange of ideas, expertise, and innovative approaches. The IBI maintains robust connections with multiple departments across the PSOM and the University of Pennsylvania, including but not limited to the Department of Genetics, the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Bioinformatics, the Department of Medicine, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the Department of Radiology, the Departments of Computer Information Science and Bioengineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Wistar Institute, and the Philadelphia VA Hospital. The faculty appointment will be in a department in the PSOM that is consistent with the scientific expertise of the successful candidate. Depending on the applicant's credentials, academic appointments are available in the Department of Genetics, the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Bioinformatics, or the Department of Medicine, with secondary appointments available as appropriate.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include establishing and overseeing a productive and vibrant research lab, publishing high impact papers in top tier journals, and successfully obtaining external funding support to sustain the lab.

Teaching responsibilities may include opportunities to teach and mentor exceptional graduate and medical students, and to be an active member of several graduate groups across campus.

Applicants must have postdoctoral research experience that shows outstanding promise. The position includes a competitive salary, high-quality laboratory space, and start-up funding. It is expected that the candidate chosen will establish an independent, extramurally funded research program and participate in teaching students in the School of Medicine.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply by April 15, 2024. Applications received after this date may be considered on a rolling basis.

Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a 2-3-page research statement, teaching statement, diversity statement, as well as the names of 3 references.
