Physical Requirements

To meet project requirements, lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 40 lbs., climb stairs and ladders, work outdoors, wear all PPE, sitting for long periods of time, standing, and walking.

Be able to work in multiple Lexington offices with with occasional travel to Eastern Kentucky, Cane Run Generating Station in Louisville, KY, and Pennsylvania site.

Shift

Monday – Friday typical working hours, for example 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. Some night and weekend shift work may also be required to meet project demands. Some job-related travel may be required.

Job Summary

UK IDEA is seeking a Principal Research Scientist to support the DE-FE0032387 DAC Hub for Appalachian Prosperity project, the DE-FE0032223 Commercial Scale Co2 Capture Front End Engineering Design Study, and the DE-FE0032460 Application of Engineering Scale UK CO2 Capture to Glass Production Facility. The Principal Research Scientist will ensure the project milestones and requirements are met including reporting, deliverables, and success criteria.

Duties and responsibilities as project manager will include but may not be limited to:
  • Act as Project Manager.
  • Organize and liaison with project partners to complete the FEED.
  • Lead UKy's review effort on P&ID provided by external project partners.
  • Advocate for UK CO2 capture process with design firms.
  • Work with the team to find and implement solutions to problems encountered within project scope and budget.
  • Responsible for resource planning and execution allocated per project.
Duties and responsibilities as lead author will include:
  • Meet all project reporting requirements: monthly, quarterly, final, topical reports, presentations.
  • Primary author on peer-reviewed journal articles and IP disclosure.
  • Provides monthly reports and presentations.
  • Performs data reduction, in-depth analysis, and data interpretation.
  • Presents project-related papers and work at conferences.
  • Prepares monthly plans/documentation for resource management.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on CO2 capture and utilization.
  • Involve and assist PI on proposal preparation and business development.
  • Provide training to junior-level staff on scientific aspects related to CO2 capture.
Additionally, the Principal Research Scientist must continually be safety conscious, self-motivated, reliable and able to multiple locations. It's also vital that this position collaborates with fellow technicians and researchers and have the ability to work both independently and with a team. Because of compelling public safety requirements, this position may require pre-employment drug screening and follow-up random drug and alcohol screenings.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Potential candidates for this position should possess a unique blend of project management expertise, strong research and reporting skills, effective communication abilities, and a commitment to safety and compliance and ideally a technical proficiency in CO2 capture. The candidate should be adept at using engineering software and laboratory equipment, capable of data analysis, and have a solid grasp of advanced mathematical concepts. Moreover, candidates should be highly organized and detail-oriented, capable of handling physical demands while adhering to PPE and safety guidelines. Effective collaboration and a willingness to accept additional responsibilities, along with regular progress reporting, are also essential. Finally, the ability to work on-site, travel as required, and maintain a high level of professional conduct in various work environments is crucial.
