Applicants must be upper-level undergraduate students (3rd or 4th year) currently enrolled in The College of Design or Landscape Architecture with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. This position will require 7-10 hours of work per week. Assistants must be able to meet the following expectations / requirements and be interested in cultivating skills related to Engagement, Leadership, Research, and Assessment.

Job Summary

DES100 Undergraduate Instructional Assistant
This assistantship will provide students the opportunity to work directly with faculty instructors and to serve as peer-to-peer mentors to teach, guide, and support students enrolled in DES100.

Per Week:
• Attend all DES100 classes on Monday and Wednesday, 12-12:50am and take attendance
• Lead a DES100 recitation on Friday, 12-12:50am
Guided by Faculty and team discussions, Assistants will reinforce weekly content through
various activities by leading a one-hour recitation to ~25 students. The goal of this hour
is to provide students with a smaller, more personalized cohort of peers with whom they
can discuss the week's content, ask questions, and brainstorm ideas for assignments.
• Contribute to a DES100 team meeting every Tuesday, time TDB.
For two hours every week, Assistants will meet with Faculty Instructor to prepare for
recitation and to discuss course content, assignments, teaching methods and student
progress.
• Provide regular office hours for meeting with students and/or research
For two hours every week, Assistants will hold predictable office hours at a time and
location of their choosing to meet with students and do research for the course. The use
of this time will vary depending on student needs. The research will be comprised of
various jobs related to course support, such as researching course topics and precedents,
gathering images and readings, corresponding with guest lecturers, and brainstorming
opportunities for learning.

• Attend a meeting prior to the start of classes for training
• Assessment
At regularly scheduled intervals throughout the semester, Assistants will evaluate and
assist with grading student assignments. The process will require approximately 4 hours
per assignment for a total of 20 hours over the course of the semester. An additional 4
hours at Midterm and Final will be spent assessing student notebooks and exhibiting the
final work.
• Final Exhibition Preparation + Installation
• Attend a meeting at the end of the semester to share reflections and discuss strategies for
improvement in subsequent course offerings. Some Teaching Assistants might be asked to return
in subsequent semesters to serve as trainers for new Teaching Assistants.

To ensure the above expectations are being met, Undergraduate Instructional Assistants will be asked to keep a time sheet and to have progress meetings with the Faculty as needed.
