Weekend Audience Editor
USA TODAY/usatoday.com, is seeking an audience editor to cover weekend hours, including 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. ET in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment.
This is a remote position, and the candidate may work from any time zone. This editor will be part of USA TODAY’s audience team, working on digital, mobile and social platforms. The candidate must be a self-starter, demonstrate strong news judgment, have prior digital news experience and a background in social media and building audiences.
This audience editor will lead USA TODAY’s response to news at night and deliver it across all our digital platforms.
They will specialize in finding a wide audience for USA TODAY’s stories, photos, videos, graphics and other content, and optimize them for different social/digital platforms.
This editor will also identify and publish pertinent wire articles or content from across the USA TODAY Network. Depending on the candidate's background, they could also write breaking news stories or create original social graphics.
This role will include night and weekend work. We are open to creative scheduling including part time work, full time work, a 4-day work week or a 5-day work week or weekends only. We are accepting creative solutions to make covering these hours work for the right candidate.
Job Level: National Digital Editor II
Minimum salary for this position: $62,000.00
Maximum salary for this position: $72,000.00
A compelling candidate:
- Demonstrates a strong understanding of audience metrics and engagement tactics.
- Is a proactive self-starter with excellent time management skills.
- Has a strong interest in what audiences care about and the tools used to discover trends like CrowdTangle, Google Trends, Twitter and Dataminr.
- Can manage coverage in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations with sound news judgment.
- Has a passion for audience growth, social media and finding new ways to reach readers.
- Is an eagle-eyed copy editor with a background in editing and writing.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working on an audience or social team for a daily news organization.
- Excellent news judgment.
- Experience curating news homepages.
- Top-notch writing and headline-writing skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent copy-editing skills.
- Understanding of search engine optimization.
- Prior reporting, writing experience not required, but preferred.
- Prior experience with digital publishing and packaging.
- Ability to edit and produce digital content packages.
- An understanding of metrics for digital, social environments.
- Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $62,000.00 and $93,150.00. Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
