The Tallahassee Democrat is looking for a versatile, hungry, committed journalist that is excited by the opportunity to jump on breaking or trending stories and believes in the power of storytelling. This reporter is digitally savvy and mobile-focused, excels at live coverage and is comfortable wielding a camera or grabbing iPhone video.
The position requires a high-level of narrative writing and the ability to find the great stories where others see the routine. Intentionally broad in scope, this reporter will go after intriguing, captivating and thought-provoking stories across topics and geography. This position has a strong emphasis on public safety and criminal justice. The ideal candidate will be able to use community connections to mine social media to take the pulse of what stories matter now.
Topics range from personal tragedy to human triumph, capturing the news of the day and the elusive question: What are people talking about? Here are some examples:
- Facebook starts buzzing with remembrances of a Tallahassee businessman who died suddenly of a rare medical condition. Who was this man? Whose lives did he touch? This reporter finds out and lets readers know why they should care and how they can help.
- A woman’s unique, life-sized lawn ornament goes missing. Her sentimental appeal to the hoodlums who stole it is piling up shares on Facebook and Twitter. This reporter writes a story and the statue is returned under the cover of darkness.

Collegiality, skilled writing, hustle and a just-say-yes attitude are a must.
